City Commission Mulls BBQA Funding

Cody Sovis | Published on 3/18/2023

We’re inviting you to voice your support this Monday, March 20. The City Commission will discuss a resolution to apply for a DNR grant to fund the acquisition of 528 acres next to Brown Bridge Quiet Area.

What It Is

Monday’s meeting, scheduled for 7 pm at the Governmental Center located at 400 Boardman Avenue in Traverse City, includes time to discuss a DNR application and how funds will be appropriated. The meeting will not decide on the acquisition itself, but public input will likely push the Commission to apply for a grant.

If awarded, the Michigan Natural Resources Trust Fund grant would fund a portion of the purchase of 528 acres next to the Brown Bridge Quiet Area. This property is mainly pristine forestland connecting the treasured Brown Bridge parcel and the Greilick Outdoor Recreation and Education Center acreage.

Why It Matters

NMMBA and several other area organizations strongly support this effort. We trust the City of Traverse City to put conservation first and protect not only the 500-plus acres included in this parcel but also preserve and connect a much larger stretch of forest from development. This raises the possibility of increased non-motorized trails and preserving Michigan’s beautiful forests and wildlife.
